Spring Pilgrimage, Arizona
On 13 April, 2025, Ash led his family during the Jewish celebration of Passover in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - with his American grandparents.
What is passover?
Passover, also known as Pesach, is a significant Jewish celebration of the freedom of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Usually celebrated with family gatherings and traditional rituals, Passover serves as a memory of the Jewish people being freed from the sacrifice and toil they had to suffer. The holiday specifically honours the moment when the Angel of Death ‘passed over’ Jewish homes, sparing their firstborns, due to the blood of a lamb on the doorframe. For Jews around the world, it is not only a time to read the Exodus story but also to reflect on themes of freedom, identity, and the importance of community. During the Seder, a ceremonial meal held on the first few nights, families gather to read from the Haggadah (a book for the passover Sedar), reciting prayers, singing songs, and indulging in symbolic foods that are a part of the history of their ancestors.
What will Ash lead?
Ash will guide us through the Haggadah and read the many prayers that commemorate the liberation of the Jews. He will read to his best ability the Hebrew prayers and teachings, written in the haggadah. Ash will then explain the 10 plagues sent by God through Moses and the 7 foods that are on the Seder plate.
